Thesis ProposalDepth Work: StructuralThe use of the filigree beam system has had a tremendous impact on the design of the other structural systems. By switching to a pre-stressed two-way slab system interior beams can be eliminated and more plenum space opened. Without interior beams the existing frame system becomes cumbersome and will be replaced with shear walls. Breadth Work A: MechanicalLarge portions of the Medical Office Building are open office spaces. The current mixing ventilation system may not be the most efficient solution, therefore an under floor air distribution (UFAD) system is being considered. Because of the complexities of UFAD, a computational fluid dynamics analysis will be necessary to qualify the design. Breadth Work B: LightingA unique feature of the Medical Office buildings is the auditorium in the basement where stock holder meetings and company presentations are held. The current lighting system is conventional downlighting and does not provide any special lighting for the presentation. A new system of shelved flourescents and a track lighting rig the presentation area will be considered to improve the quality of the space. Posted: Dec. 10, 2004
