Building Statistics

Part 1
General Building Data

  • Building name:  Boyds Bear Country
  • Location and site:  Cates Lane, Sevier County, Pigeon Forge, Tennessee
  • Building occupant name:  Boyds Collections, Ltd.
  • Occupancy:  Assembly, Mercantile, and Business
  • Size (total square feet):  112,620 sf
  • Number of stories above grade / total levels:  4/5

  • Primary project team:
  • Dates of construction:  11-10-03 to 10-15-04 (contract)
  • Project delivery method:  Design/Build

  • Architecture:  The building is designed as a large scale barn, in Pennsylvania Dutch style and tradition.
    • It features a large mural on the East side of the building, showing the company's trademark bears working on the construction and decoration of the building. This mural is approximately 40' high and 60' wide.
    • The front of the lot features a steel silo bearing the Boyds logo. It measures 20' in diameter and is capped by a dome at 65' of full height.
    • The top of the structure is finished with 3 cupolas. The smaller side cupolas measure approximately 25' in height and are capped with a metal flag; the larger center cupola measures approximately 36' in height and features a human sized cut metal bear.
    • The interior of the building features a decorative wooden "structure" along with wooden column covers to disguise the load-bearing steel members.

  • Major national model codes:
    • 1999 Standard Building Code
    • 1999 Standard Fire Code
    • 1997 Standard Plumbing, Mechanical, and Gas Code
    • 2002 National Electric Code
    • 2000 International Building Code
    • ANSI 1998

  • Zoning:  C-2, portions of site originally R-2.
  • Historical requirements:  n/a

  • Building envelope:
    • The building consists of multiple exterior wall finish systems:
      • The front facade of the building consists of 18" wide snap on metal batten metal wall panels. These are supported on CMUs (typically 8") with metal furrings, plywood sheathing, and felt sheets.
      • Lower exterior sections consist of 6" think fieldstone or 6" colored CMUs, supported on cold-formed steel and plywood sheathing.
    • Windows are typically aluminum clad wooden frames and can reach up to ~30' in height.
    • Louvers are included prominently throughout the building, and are typically a combination of aluminum and wood construction. They range in height from 2' to nearly 30'.
    • The roof finish is similar to the front facade finish. The exterior is 18" wide structural standing vertical seam metal roof panels with a galvalume finish. This finish is also included on the roof of the three cupolas.
