Thesis Abstract

The Medical Office Building has several features that make it stand out from other office buildings. The most interesting feature is the multiple types of spaces in the building. These include a full service food area, a multi-story atrium, a divisible auditorium, open space offices, and traditional offices. As a result of these different spaces, several different requirements are required in terms of lighting, ventilation and structural systems. The current design utilizes cast-in-place concrete frames with a one-way slab system for structural support. Although not an overall unique system, the use of a steel truss roof framing system over the atrium and the curved surface along the south western face create areas where the classroom model of one material in a rectangular bay configuration no longer applies. Furthermore, the connection between the Medical Office Building and its neighbor offer a unique opportunity to look at the architectural considerations of adding buildings to an older complex.
