Discuss material changes with the group.  Talk about using polyster instead of the plastic for the body.

8-25-01

Went to Nittany Hobby.  Looked at different tubing for the thru hole for the propeller/leg assembly.  Also looked at different materials for posts.  Bought 1/8” aluminum tubing for thru rod and a 1/4” dowell rod for the post.

8-27-01

Went back to Nittany Hobby and returned the tubing.  Then went to Lowe’s and bought copper tubing for thru hole.  Worked on team contract.

Research on Foam/Neoprene

  1. Too expensive: per foot cost at 3mm thickness and 51” wide $12.85

  2. Too large order quantities: 51” x 83”

  3. Low gas permeability

  4. http://www.harboro.co.uk/PAGE8.HTM

Ø  NEOPRENE*  (Polychloroprene)

Ø  One of the first synthetic rubbers developed in the search for oil resistant rubber. Widely used due to its combination of useful properties and comparatively low price.

Ø  Properties

1.      Resistant to a wide range of hostile environments

2.      Resistant to oils and chemicals

3.      Weather and water resistant

4.      Can withstand temperatures from -30°C to 95°C

5.      Easy to process and compound, offering cost benefits

6.      Flame retardant

7.      Can be produced in any color required

Ø      Limitations

1.      Unsuitable for applications requiring contact with fuels

2.      Tendency to tear once there is initial damage

3.      Some Neoprenes may crystallise during storage or use causing temporary stiffening (increase in modulus/hardness). If parts are deformed during crystallisation, they may take on a set. However, crystallisation is a readily reversible phenomenon and can be removed by warming over 80°C. It can be prevented by the use of special grades.

Ø      Typical Applications

1.      Most general mechanical applications without contact with fuel

2.      Particularly useful in marine environments due to good ozone resistance.

Ø      *Neoprene is a registered trademark of Du Pont.

The relevant information about the foamies being made of ethyl vinyl acrylate
MASK GENERATION FOR MATERIAL HANDLING
In the CAM-LEM system where a cut-then-stack approach is employed, extraction of the target material from the cutting table without picking up the waste forms an essential step.

The CAM-LEM system employs a novel vacuum gripper unit for this purpose [20].

The gripper has two vacuum sources connected to it. One of the vacuum sources creates suction about the perimeter of the gripper platen. The second one generates suction everywhere

inside the perimeter of the gripper surface. To accomplish the task of picking up the target material without picking the waste, masks are employed that have holes in the regions

that correspond to the target material restricting suction to these regions. The masks are flat sheets of Ethyl Vinyl Acrylate, called Foamies [47], which are compliant to a large extent to

accommodate for surface irregularities of the feedstock tape.

Talked to Mike Immel gave the following webage for a bee keepers knife which could be used to cut foamies.  www.dadant.com/catalog/images  items m003391

Received email from Dr. Medieros

Hi Lance -
I'm glad you found the fans.  I will still try to steal the one from my gym so everyone can see it.  I liked your contract, but I'm a bit skeptical about the Phillies!  One thought on the contract - you have focused on making meetings.  What if one of the group agrees to do a particular task but doesn't get it done?
Dr. M.

8/30/01 – Email from Jennifer Zechman

I just wanted to send a quick email to you engineering students, so that you have our email addresses and we can be in contact.  From our class (after a few rearrangements) you'll be working with Gene Walsh (gcw112@psu.edu) and me.  Let us know about anything that you need from us, and we'll do the same for you.

Gene and I were discussing our project and we thought the first step, since you need to be doing this soon too, would be the pricing and costing aspect.  I guess we'll need to know costs of materials, etc. from you.  Prof. Pierce has been telling us that what we need to do is go downtown and talk to store owners about how much they think they could sell our products for.  We're also going to have to survey students and alumni on their likes and dislikes about the products and potential prices.  If there are any questions that you would like included in that survey, just let me know.

9/03/01 - Email from Jennifer Zechman

Our group is going to have a meeting on Wednesday night at 9:30 to work on some of the business aspects of our project.  If any of you are interested in coming and checking out what we're doing or giving some of your input, you're welcome to attend.  We'll meet in front of the fish tank in the HUB. Hope to see ya there!

11/29/01 – meeting with Scott Heckman

Talked to Scott. He said the colors at the bottom of the page were due to maintenance problems and that he go up and try and fix it for us. As for inserting the sticker paper into the tray, he said to place the cut-out side face down (i will put an "x" on a plain piece of paper first and double check this) and we'll have to trim off a little bit from the bottom as there is no manual feed nor a way to adjust for that particular size.  He also said that printing a wax print(i.e. shiny glossy look) may hold up better but it depends on what we want the aesthetics of our product to be.

New Sticker Sheet Samples

Folks -

A package arrived for you - it has Larry's name on it.  From the return address, I'd guess it's new stickers.  It is in my mailbox - either see me or Linda to get it.  If you see Linda, tell her that it's in my mailbox.

Propellers ordered from Grish Products without the Tornado and black tip printing.   Asked about getting just black tips but the supplier could only offer no printing at all or all the printing.  For aesthetics and true Penn State appeal, the “Tornado” printing was not acceptable and the group decided to just get no printing at all.
