Research:

Dr. Kenan Ünlü has had extensive experience in Neutron Depth Profiling, Neutron Activation Analysis, Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis, X-Ray Diffraction, Ion Implantation, Cold Neutron Source Design and Operation, Neutron Beam Design and Collimation, Cryorefrigerator and Thermosyphon Operation, Nuclear Instrumentation, Data Processing, SEM and TEM Operation, and Sample Preparation.

Dr. Ünlü has performed Neutron Activation Analysis experiments by using an Am-Be neutron source and a Van de Graff accelerator for 14 MeV neutrons at Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey. He has designed and operated the Neutron Depth Profiling (NDP) facility at the University of Michigan's Ford Nuclear Reactor.

During 1985-1990, Dr. Ünlü's research concentrated on the investigation of helium-3 behavior in amorphous alloys. Since amorphous alloys have shown substantial resistance to surface erosion under helium bombardment, and exhibit desirable mechanical and chemical properties as compared to their crystalline counterparts, they have become potential candidates for the first-wall materials of future fusion reactors. Dr. Ünlü is first to measure helium-3 depth profiles in amorphous alloys by using the NDP. He also investigated the surface features and microstructural changes of helium-3 implanted amorphous alloys upon annealing. His contribution to helium-3 distribution, release and microstructural evolution of amorphous alloys was well received by his peers.

Dr. Ünlü initiated several research projects at the Nuclear Engineering Teaching Laboratory (NETL) --a new reactor facility at The University of Texas at Austin-- since 1990. These include the development of Neutron Depth Profiling (NDP), Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis (PGAA), Texas Cold Neutron Source (TCNS), Gadolinium Neutron Capture Therapy (GdNCT), Converging Guide Neutron Focusing System (CGNFS), and Texas Intense Positron Source (TIPS). Among these projects the NDP, TCNS, GdNCT, PGAA, and CGNFS are in operation. Dr. Ünlü has obtained three multi-year grants as a PI/PD in the year 1995-1996 to develop a Reactor Based Intense Positron Beam for material characterizations (sponsored by Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Advanced Technology Program), study of radiation damage and microstructural changes of stainless steel due to long term irradiation by alpha particles emitted from weapon-grade plutonium and gallium interactions with zircalloy cladding (sponsored by DOE and Amarillo National Resource Center for Plutonium). Both radiation damage in stainless steel and gallium interaction with zircalloy studies have been completed successfully.

Dr. Ünlü has joined Cornell University faculty in 1998 to develop new reactor-based nuclear methods at the Ward Center for Nuclear Sciences as its director. A new dedicated NAA facility with automatic sample changer and digital spectrum analyzer has been completed. The Cold-Neutron Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis facility and the development of conventional and Time of Flight Neutron Depth Profiling facility are completed. After the Cornell University administration's decision to close the Ward Center for Nuclear Sciences projects Dr. Ünlü decided to move to the Pennsylvania State University to design and develop new neutron beam facilities and reactor based nuclear methods for primarily materials research. Majority of Dr. Ünlü's research equipment and funds were transferred from Cornell University to Penn State. Major improvement are planned for Neutron Imaging, Fast Neutron Irradiation, Cobalt-60 Gamma Cell and Neutron Activation Analysis along with the new capabilities for materials research using Neutron Depth Profiling, Cold Neutron Source, Neutron Powder Diffraction, and Cold Neutron Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis. Funds (approximately $700K/year for seven years) obtained from DOE program called "Innovation in Nuclear Infrastructure and Education" will be used for these developments. Dr. Ünlü obtained several multi-year research grants from NSF, DOE, and industry in 2004/2005 for innovative research projects including Soft Error measurements, Dendrochemistry, Fuel Cell Imaging, Neutron Tomography and a Radiochemistry Education Award Program (REAP) funding to establish a radiochemistry program at Penn State.

Teaching

1) MS&E 459 and 603 – Physics of Modern Analysis – Cornell University
(with Prof. Thompson and Grubb)

Taught neutron spectrometry and neutron activation analysis laboratory section of the course.

This course will cover the underlying physics and experimental principles of numerous modern materials analysis techniques, including RBS and channeling, ERD, NRA, NAA, SIMS, EXAFS, XPS, Auger, EDX, PIXE, AFM and X-ray Diffraction. Quantitative understanding of the interaction physics will be emphasized. Topics to be covered include classical particle—particle interactions and scattering theory, energy loss mechanisms in solids, nuclear energy states and nuclear reactions, and electron--electron and electron--photon interactions. Discussion of each of these interactions will be integrated with discussion of the corresponding analytical techniques. The advantages and limitations of each technique will be addressed from these underlying physical interactions. The course will emphasize techniques which allow determination of the elemental composition and depth profiles; analytical techniques providing chemical bonding, structural and compositional information will be included and the time allotted will depend on the interests of the class.
