Thesis Proposal

Executive Summary

Depth Work: Lighting and Electrical

The lighting depth includes the lighting redesign of the following five spaces in CHRRA: the main entrance lobby; the auditorium; the first floor open office; and the exterior entrance, pathways, and south terrace. The redesign for these spaces will include concept analysis, sketches, computer renderings using AGI32 and Lightscape, fixture selection, luminaire layout, circuiting and controls. A daylight analysis will be performed for the main entrance lobby and the first floor open office.

The electrical depth includes the electrical distribution system redesign of the circuits and panelboards involved with the five lighting redesigns, an analysis of 277V lighting verses the existing 120V lighting including recircuiting the existing lighting in CHRRA, and analysis of using high output linear fluorescent lamps verses the existing T8 lamps.

Breadth Work: Daylight Control System Case Study and Construction Management Analysis

For my breadth work I will be looking at the reduction in solar heat gain into the South facing first and second floor open offices in CHRRA due to the addition of the automated shade systems. Seven different daylight control systems will be compared based on energy savings, cost, maintenance, flexibility, aesthetics, and occupant comfort in order to determine which system not only best reduces solar heat gain in the space, but also works the best for this particular building application. The Construction Management breadth will look at the labor and material costs associated with the proposed electrical, lighting, and mechanical changes in the building, looking at payback period and construction feasbility for the systems.
