Patrick Murphy is a fifth year student in Architectural Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University. He is currently pursuing his Bachelor and Master of Architectural Engineering degrees, specializing in Building Mechanical System Design and intends to graduate in May 2007.

Patrick has utilized his summers to gain valuable experience and perspectives on Architectural Engineering.  During the summer of 2004 Patrick enrolled in Penn State Sede di Roma, the Architectural Studies Minor program based in the heart of Rome, Italy.  His studies there fostered a passion for architecture and opened him to other cultural "ways of being."  In the summer of 2005 Patrick participated in an internship at CUH2A’s Princeton office where he gained unique experience working on BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratory facilities. Among the projects he worked on was the University of Alabama-Birmingham Southeastern Biosafety Laboratory (SEBLAB).  This past summer Patrick worked at an internship with SmithGroup in its Washington, DC office.  There he furthered his professional development with work on the Gallaudet SLCC and an existing conditions report on the National Academy of Sciences Headquarters.

Outside of the classroom Patrick has been an engaged leader at Penn State.  Besides being a member of the Schreyer Honors College, he is currently the President of the Penn State Chapter of ASHRAE, a leader of Penn State Students for Tobacco Awareness and its “Smoke-Free Bars” Campaign, and on the executive board of Penn State Colleges Against Cancer.  Patrick is also a member of the AE Honor Society Phi Alpha Epsilon and an “AE Envoy,” a department representative and tour guide. Patrick has also been a dedicated member of the Men’s Varsity Cross Country, Indoor Track, and Outdoor Track and Field Teams for all five years at Penn State.

After graduation Patrick will pursue a career as a mechanical design engineer at Vanderweil Engineers in Alexandria, VA, become LEED Certified, and earn his license as a professional engineer.
