Welcome to Tom Caldwell's AE Senior Thesis e-Portfolio

Tom Caldwell is presently at the conclusion of his undergraduate career at Pennsylvania State University. Following the summer of 2006 he intends to graduate with a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering degree, specializing in the construction management field. After years of gaining knowledge in the construction industry from the experienced Penn State Architectural Engineering staff, he is prepared and eager to begin his professional career.

Thus far Tom has had the ability to apply his classroom knowledge during two recent summer internships. The first during the summer of 2004 at Kajima Construction Company in Rochelle Park, New Jersey. There he aided in the planning, estimating, and consulting of such projects as Sterling Glen Retirement Homes in upstate NY and Harrison Suites Hotel in Ocean City Maryland. His position as an assistant project engineer with Kajima allowed him to get his feet wet and get first hand understanding of how the office and project management aspects of building construction really worked.

The second internship took place during the summer of 2005 at The Whiting Turner Contracting Company in Bridgewater, New Jersey. There Tom worked on the site of The Bristol Myers Squibb and Reckson-Daiichi pharmaceutical renovation projects performing quality control investigations, writing change notifications, and managing subcontractor logs. This oppertunity allowed Tom to see a different side of construction as he spent most of his internship in the field managing the project hands-on. Both work experiences gave Tom valuable insight into the construction industry while staying close to his family in New Jersey.

Pennsylvania State University has given Tom many great opportunities to grow not only intellectually, but as a person. He has become the President of the Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, pitched in the Penn State Club Baseball League, and has traveled all over the world. In the Fall of 2004 Tom was accepted to the semester abroad program and spent three months in the Civil Engineering department of The University of Leeds in England. He has also become involved in the Architectural Engineering Department by joining the Student Partnership for Achieving Construction Excellence and The Student Society of Architectural Engineering. In the future Tom wishes to become further involved in the construction industry and advance his career as far as possible. He wishes to stay up to date will all the current industry issues while learning a great deal more about the profession.
