AE 481W/482 Course Reflection
I first recall hearing about Senior Thesis from many of the previous AE students who graduated before me. Most of them shared horror stories of what they had to endure trying to complete this year-long project. After I finally finished my thesis project this past month, I came to this conclusion; most of those stories, while exaggerated quite a bit, were probably true. I actually came up with quite a few of my own. However the skills learned and the experience gained from finishing this project is invaluable.
As this project progressed, I found that I am interested in very specific
areas of construction. I was able to use information gained through this project
to select my future employer. Showing them completed thesis as evidence of
my structural abilities was a major step in landing the job that I was looking
for. The AE thesis program definitely helped me to not only utilize the skills
that I have been developing over the past five years, it also forced me to
adapt and learn new skills on my own, which is exactly what I'll be doing
in my career after Penn State.
CPEP & Discussion Board Reflection
The CPEP website is a great tool for keeping all the information in this course organized and easily accessible. Going through the senior thesis project is a very stressful time for most students and the AE department does a great job helping students manage that stress by instructing us in Dreamweaver and providing us with simple templates thus making our lives much easier.
The discussion board is also a great asset not only for the information gained
through it, but also for the experience of presenting questions to knowledgeable
professionals. It taught me how to formulate questions in order to get better
and clearer responses and also gave me confidence for the future when I start
working at a structural firm.
