Thesis Proposal
The proposed thesis will analyze and assess three alternative changes to make the concrete core more efficent. The first change involves removing two of the existing concrete core sections. This change increases the amount of marketable floor area. A steel braced frame replaces the concrete core as a second alternative. The third alternative looks at areas in which the web and flange elements of the concrete core can be reduced in thickness.
The first breadth topic looks at two energy collecting systems. One system involves miniature wind turbines at the parapet of the building. Since the facade of the Comcast Center is exposed to a tremendous amount of energy from the sun it makes sense to explore the possibilites of photovoltaic cells. The second option for energy collection is a glazing system that consists of a photovoltaic patch between two panes of glass.
The second breadth topic covers construction management issues. The Comcast Center will be the tallest LEED Building upon completion. Since points toward the LEED Rating can be earned during the construcion phase these will opportunities will be investigated.
