Thesis Abstract

The University of Rochester's new Biomedical Engineering & Optics Facility, currently under construction, will be a state-of-the art facility that will expand on the University's world-class optics research, and encourage the growth of the newer Biomedical Engineering program. Strategically located on U of R's River Campus and built adjacent to the current Biomedical Engineering facility, Wilmot Hall, this new structure will house various research facilities, teaching labs, offices, and demonstration halls. The 100,000 sq ft building is five stories high with a partial basement and mechanical penthouse. The fifth floor, currently unoccupied, will provide for expansion of the program as needed. Architectural features include an 80' atrium inside the main entrance, channel glass facade at stairwells, and a pedestrian bridge to the nearby CSB Building.

The architect of record is Perkins & Will, with LeMessurier Consultants as the structural engineer through the design development phase. The project was then handed to SWBR Architects & Engineers as the associate architect and for structural documentation. Construction began in April of 2005, with an expected completion of December 2006 and a total project cost of $37.7 million.
