THESIS ABSTRACT

I am very pleased to be able to use The Helena as the basis for my Senior Thesis Project. With the structure being created from concrete, it gives me some design challenges which I have not yet encountered in my previous work. I have not had extensive work in the area of concrete, so I am very much looking forward to being able to gain the knowledge of the design of a concrete structure. I think this building is large enough to provide many possibilities for alternative systems which I will be considering as the focus for my thesis. The building's most unique feature, from a structural standpoint, is the height of the building compared to its slenderness. This feature provides interesting dynamics which need to be taken into account when considering the gravity and lateral systems used in the building.
