Thesis Proposal

Depth Work: Structural

The purpose of this thesis is to design an alternate structural system for the William W. Wilkins building. To do this, reinforced concrete skip-joists will be investigated. Skip-joists are available as either one-way or two-way systems. After an initial investigation the best option will be chosen for a more in depth design.

Breadth Work:

Two breadth studies will be perfomed as part of this thesis. The first is an analysis of incorporating a photovoltaic skin facade into the building systems. This will include a look at the energy savings, the integration of the facade with the main energy system, and a distribution of the energy obtained through the photovoltaic cells. The second topic is a cost, schedule, and construction management comparison of skip-joists and a one-way slab with beams. This will determine why skip-joists are generally used over a slab with beams.
