Thesis Proposal

Proposal Executive Summary

Proposal

Proposal Breadth Topics

The following proposal is for a Mechanical Redesign of the Existing Systems of the Penn State Chemistry Building. The proposal for the following semester's design project includes a redesign of the chiller plant in the basement of the building at 4050 Tons; which serves Chemistry, Life Science, and coming soon Life Science II. The redesign will look at alternative energy sources for powering the plant; and their effects on emissions and equipment cost.

Breadth Topics for this proposal include an atrium smoke evacuation system retrofit. This will require analyzing the atium before its valued engineer state at five stories. The following will be done using a transient model developed by Newcomb and Boyd, and a computational fluid model developed using the program Phoenics VR.

Other breadth topics include a structural breadth in which the column loading of the buildings steel skeleton will be analyzed to determine if the columns and beam are within capacity to carry the additional gravity based load. The gravity load being analyzed will be the nearly 2 ton centrifugal fans that where added during the Fire Protection Breadth. The following will be produced using a RAM Structural Model.
