Thesis Proposal

This years thesis proposal will focus on issues that are pertinent to the local construction market and the Sears Centre project. In order to accurately evaluate the key issues, the thesis proposal is distributed in 3 sections. The construction management depth study is divided into (2) components related to local market conditions and labor conditions. (2) Breadth studies will focus on evaluating the current envelope/ cladding system and ice-floor installation methods. A powerpoint presentation is included to disribe in detail how these items were selected and their associated value to the overall project.

Technical Assignment 1

"Tech Description"

Technical Assign #1 (Existing Conditions/ Preliminary Project Management)

This technical report will address the background criteria for the Sears Centre. Key aspects discussed in this report will included existing site and budgetary conditions, schedule determinants and the various contract held by the project players. Interesting aspects highlighted included the building systems summary, vertical information flow and Square Foot estimate comparisons. In essence, this first report will serve as the frame work for additional reports which will culminate into well defined topic for further thesis research.

Technical Assignment 2

"Tech Description"

Technical Assign #2 (Cost and Method Analysis)

This report will detail the cost and scheduling functions for the Sears Centre project. A detailed structural systems estimate was generated, documenting the associated cost incurred for installation of foundation and superstructure systems. Included is this report is a detailed schedule outlining the task and sub tasks associated with each milestone. Layout procedures for Arena envelope systems are documented in 3-erection scheme. It was determined, that the selected layout plan include the use of a 300'-0' lattice boom crawler crane. Square foot estimates for arena Air Distribution areas, and a general conditions estimate conclude the cost analysis section of this project.

Technical Assignment 3

"Tech Description"

Technical Assign #3 (Alternative Methods and Research)

Alternative and Research methods will serve as the frame work for this years thesis proposals. Specific emphasis is two-fold. (1) Evaluation of issues affecting construction industries and local markets, (2) Analyzing project specific problems which hamper fluid project delivery. Critical Industries issues discussed in this report are the Design Build Operate-Maintain (PDS) and the implications of e-Submittal management via Prolog and other software packages. Technical Analysis will highlight alternatives to the complex envelope systems, affects of union labor force in determining Precast vs. CIP construction and the coordination process typically completed for arena FF&E.
