AE 481W/482 Course Reflection
In looking back on the senior thesis project, it was a very good experience. At times, the project did seem like nothing would get done or I would never complete my work; however, it does help prepare for real working experiences. In a full time engineering position, we will need to be able to manage our time and solve all of the engineering issues related to the projects on our own, or with some help from more senior engineers. This project allows us to experience more of a "real world" work experience than typical lecture style classes while allowing us to still consult the faculty and learn through the process.
Going into the project, it seemed like I had so much information to sort through and so much work to do that it would never end. Now that it is finished, and I can look back, I am glad that I was able to sort through all of the work. The first semester, with AE 481W, it allowed me to slowly transition from a traditional style class to a thesis style project. 481W allows you to do much of your work independently with some direction from the faculty. Then in 482, I was able to take my project in my own direction and deal with and solve the issues that I was interested in and wanted to study more.
In summary, although it seems like it was a lot, maybe even too much work, the project helped prepare me and transition me towards working with real building design and the issues surrounding it. It is a good experience, although I am relieved that it is finished.
CPEP & Discussion Board Reflection
The CPEP and discussion boards were both somewhat helpful. In general, I found personally that questions were easier to ask directly to faculty, rather than to post on the discussion board. The CPEP sites were useful and also somewhat helpful in nature. The requirements for posting things to the website allowed progress to be checked and deadlines to be met. Without posting deadlines, many of the pieces of the project would not have solid deadlines. Personally, I find these types of deadlines helpful to make sure I do the work in time without procrastinating too much.
