AE 481W/482 Course Reflection

This yearlong course allows each student to study and redesign an existing building. AE 481W allows the student to gain an in-depth understanding within the student's option through three technical assignment which requires the description and analysis of the existing building systems. Through these assignments and other research, this class culminates with a proposal for a depth study within the student's specific area of study and two other breadth studies. The spring course, AE 482, is spent researching and completing the proposed changes to the building concluding in a final thesis report and presentation at the end of the year.

Having never had an internship, coming into Senior Thesis was a bit intimidating. I did not know whether or not I would have the skills needed to understand building design and to apply my school knowledge in a useful way. Fortunately, the building Technical Reports as well as help from my Structural Advisor got me on the right track to prepare me for the Spring Semester. Time management was certainly a good skill to use though I found that most of the time either I was working on Thesis or catching up with the work I put off to finish Thesis. I am certainly glad I only took an average of 15 credits over the two semesters instead of my usual 18 or 19.

When the Spring semester started, I did a complete overhaul of my Thesis Proposal with the help of my Structural Advisor. The new proposal was very challenging as it was a topic that I had never studied. A lot of research was required to get the necessary background and I even sat in on a Connections class for further help. All and all, Senior Thesis was a great learning experience for me as to how projects are done in a real job. Though it was a lot of work at times and could get very stressful, I'm glad to have this experience under my belt as I make my way into the working world.

 

CPEP & Discussion Board Reflection

The CPEP portion of AE 481W and AE 482 require that each student create and maintain a website that displays the student's work during each semester. Various assignments during the year require the students to complete specific portions of the website, but there is freedom to add other information or links to the site. Also, the CPEP thesis webpage is the center for thesis activity providing access to all of the assignments and online resources. The discussion board, part of the main thesis webpage, is an online resource of industry professionals volunteering to answer questions posted by students during the year.

Maintaining and programming a website was a rather easy task this year. I've always enjoyed using computers and I think that the CPEP sites are a really easy way to keep track of all our Thesis data as well as show other companies our work. I hope that in the future, more of Thesis becomes web based instead of the slew of hard copies we have to make for every Tech Assignement up until our final Thesis Presentation itself.

The Discussion Board was a useful way to get information out to all the Thesis students at once and provided us with a panel of people to answer our various questions. I mostely utilized my Strutural Advisor when it came to project questions, but I still believe the discussion board is a useful tool that should be maintained. All in all, I'm impressed with the level of technology we have to use for our Thesis and I only hope this grows for years to come.
