Course Reflection:
This thesis is a
required project for 5th year students. The requirements of this project
far exceeded any other school project that I've had to complete thus far
in my education. At first, the project seemed a little intimidating when
I thought about the amount of work that needed to be completed. The building
structure was composed of light gauge metal stud framing and a Hambro floor
system. I was unfamiliar with both of these systems from a design and construction
standpoint. This made it hard to understand aspects of the building until
I was able to discuss it with some members of the faculty to get a better
understanding.
I was also unsure of what was going to be included in my proposal. The lateral
force resisting system was more complicated than other classroom examples
that I had previously worked on. Because of this, I initially had difficulty
in correctly determining the forces in the shear walls. After working with
several members of the faculty, I was able to correct my mistakes and also
learn a method of design that reduced the forces. This led me to the decision
to design a new shear wall system.
Upon returning from semester break, it became very evident that the next couple
of months would be filled with plenty of thesis work. Things didn't seem quite as
bad once I began and some of the work was completed. Overall, this project was a great
learning experience. I was able to work with a variety of systems and materials that I
had not been exposed to before this project. I feel that this will greatly benefit me
in my professional endeavors.
CPEP/Discussion Board Reflection:
It was a little difficult learning how to create and update my website, but it became easier as the semester went on. I did not directly utilize the discussion board, but from the emails I received in response to other students' questions, I believe that it was a very useful tool.
