Welcome to Julie Thorpe's AE Senior Thesis e-Portfolio
Technical Assignments
The primary goal of this thesis project is to modify the existing HVAC system to reduce energy consumption and yearly utility costs. This will consequently reduce emissions as well. Secondary goals include optimizing the artificial lighting in the laboratory spaces and office pods located on the second and third floors as well as resizing affected electrical system components throughout the building. The proposal contains an overview of the building and mechanical systems, proposed redesign, breadth work, and schedule of work.
Technical Assignment 1 & Executive Summary
This report examines if air handling units 1 & 2 of the Landscape Building at Janelia Farm Research Campus is compliant with AHRAE Standard 6.21-2004 ventilation requirements at design conditions. These two air handlers serve 90,000 cfm at design conditions to Zones A-C on all three levels of the building. After following the zone calculation procedure outlined in Section 6.2.2, it was determined the air handling units 1 & 2 are compliant.
Technical Assignment 2 & Executive Summary
This report examines energy use and emissions production of the Landscape Building at Janelia Farm Research Campus using ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2004 Energy Standard for Buildings at design conditions. The building was found to have achieved Gold LEED Rating through innovative design and specialized equipment. The lighing power density analysis found that only two of eight zones met ASHRAE standards.
The building was modeled using Carrier’s Hourly Analysis Program 4.20a (HAP) to compare a calculated design load with the actual design load performed by Burt Hill Kosar Rittelmann. In addition to this, HAP’s building simulation provides data on energy usage and emissions production. The emissions data was compared to a series of spreadsheets created by the Energy Information Administration, United States Department of Energy.
The HAP calculations did not come up with numbers similar to those of
the original design. This can be attributed to a crucial information not
being known and assumptions made during calculation.
Technical Assignment 3 & Executive Summary
This report looks into the design of the mechanical system by analyzing the system starting at the conceptual phase through competition and operation.
