 AE 481W/482 Course Reflection

It is hard to put an experience such as thesis into proper narration, with lessons learned spanning ethical fields as well as the engineering discipline. Looking back over the course an academic year there were a few activities which stand out. Developing and formulating a precise and direct proposal and developing a professional thesis are two of the major activities.

The final output of the thesis report, presentation, and website were amazing achievements, however the bulk of the learning experience occured with the supplemental activities. Discussion with industry professionals provided valuable real world application to the senior thesis experience. Engaging in site visits of the thesis building as well as other construction sites allowed me to gain insight into building envelope construction methodology and sequence.

AE 481W was the more technically driven of the two semesters with concrete dealines for building analysis and proposal development. This was a valuable exercise in gaining all the knowledge of our facilities and especially in areas which may need improving. Students were then allowed to expand on their interest areas and possible construction challenges in order to develop a thesis proposal.

Spring semester or AE 482 was organized by the student and dictated by the proposal developed. This was a great was to learn how to efficiently manage time and arrange meetings with professionals and advisors. The free flow of the semester is more closely tied to how the real construction industry works with final deadlines and the individual having to find the an applicable way from A to B.

Thesis was an engaing exercise and I will surely use many of the lessons I've learned throughout the rest of my professional career. This does not only include the contacts I have made, but some core building construction issues as well as time management skills.

CPEP & Discussion Board Reflection

I was a little hesistant at first to engage in the development and upkeep of this thesis website, but in hindsight I believe it was a rewarding activity. Many construction projects are employing websites and perhaps I will be able to utilize this additional knowledge I've gained in that regard. The help sessions and website templates were extremely helpful in keeping students from getting frustrated since most have never had formal training in website development. I truly am impressed with the way that this webpage has turned out and I am extremely thankful for all the help from fellow students and industry professionals.

The discussion board was an easy way for students and professionals to communicate directly. Information provided through this medium was relevant and helpful, and should be used for future thesis classes. The industry members were fantastic with answering questions quickly and also providing other areas for more information. I would like to personally thank all the industry members involved with the discussion board and their timely responses.
