Proposal Memo

The lighting space proposal memo indicates which spaces I plan on redesigning for the senior thesis project. The spaces were chosen based on system integration issues and contains descriptions, drawings, dimensions, layouts, and tasks that relate to the space.

Technical Assignment 1

This report reviews the existing lighting conditions at the Pennsylvania Academy of Music in Lancaster, PA. The analysis included research into the luminaires used, their lamping, the respective light loss factors, lighting design criteria specific to the use of the space, and the lighting photometric reports. The spaces were rendered in AGI32. Luminous power densities were calculated and compared with the ASHRAE 90.1-2004 standard. I have concluded that the existing design meets nearly all of the required criteria and power densities.

Technical Assignment 2

In this Technical Report, I have analyzed the electrical loads and distribution system for The Pennsylvania Academy of Music. I researched the types of devices that went into the building and how they interconnected to form complete systems. I then analyzed the systems to see if they meet the requirements set forth in the National Electric Code of 2005. Complete load and demand factor calculations were applied to every load of the building. These loads were used to analyze the feeding circuits that sent current throughout the building. The design drawings and specifications were used to get much of this information, though they are not yet complete versions of what will go into the building as the building is still under construction. I gathered additional information through manufacturers and I ultimately had to make several assumptions which I have noted. After analysis, I have concluded that the electrical distribution system is sized appropriately for the current loads.

The communications systems were also analyzed. The importance of the audio/visual, fire protection, security, and voice/data systems are very important to the functionality of The Pennsylvania Academy of Music. In addition, the communications systems and power distribution system must be designed to not interfere with each other. After analysis, it is clear that care was taken in the design to create a symbiotic relationship between the communications systems and the power distribution system.

Technical Assignment 3

Technical Assignment 3 is a schematic design presentation that will be delivered to and critiqued by a panel of professional lighting designers. In this report, I give an overview of the building and how the different parts of the building are spatially related. From these, I give an overview of the concepts and goals that I have developed for each space that I am going to redesign. The report also presents the lighting schemes that I think best address the criteria that I have set for each space.
