ABOUT KEENAN
Keenan atop the Tower of Pisa

Keenan Yohe grew up in rural Paradise, Pennsylvania, outside of the city of Du Bois. Throughout middle and high school, he enjoyed drawing and designing his own buildings and cars. When it came time to choose a career, architecture seemed like the way to go. While visiting different colleges, however, architecture professors emphasized the importance of art and sculpture in building design, rather than math and physics, two of Keenan's favorite and strongest subjects. "The only number an architect needs to know is the phone number of a good engineer" was a quote from one such professor that helped direct Keenan toward engineering. Not wanting to abandon completely his interest in art and design, Keenan chose to pursue Architectural Engineering for the best combination of creativity and mathematics. Since their AE program is the best around, Penn State was the logical choice.

Keenan graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Du Bois Area High School in 2003, and left Du Bois for Happy Valley that fall. At Penn State, Keenan is currently a fifth-year student, and will graduate in May 2008 with both a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in Architectural Engineering, as well as a minor in Architectural Studies. He spent eight weeks in the summer of 2006 participating in "Sede di Roma," an architecture program in Italy. Walking the streets of Rome, surrounded by ancient buildings on a daily basis gave him a new appreciation of both architecture and structural engineering. Keenan is also a member of the Student Society of Architectural Engineers, and the Treasurer of the Structural Engineers Association - Penn State Student Chapter.

In the summer of 2006, Keenan was an intern at KTH Architects, a small firm in his hometown of Du Bois. There he gained real-world experience with AutoCAD and working drawings, and learned a lot about the building industry and how buildings actually go together. During the summer of 2007, Keenan worked at the State College office of Hope Furrer Associates, a structural consulting firm. At this internship, he got into the actual structural design process, including computer modeling, design spreadsheets, and hand calculations. Both of these internships were extremely helpful, earning him invaluable hands-on experience, as well as reassuring him that he had chosen the right career.

When he isn't at class or working, Keenan likes to hang out with his friends, playing roller hockey and tennis or playing guitar. He also enjoys playing intramural sports with SSAE and SEA, such as flag football and soccer.

As of February 1st, 2008, Keenan has accepted a job at Holbert Apple Associates of Olney, MD. He will begin working there on June 16, 2008.
