STUDENT BIO: A biographical sketch of the student
Stephen Dung Tat is currently a fifth year student at Penn State University. He will graduate in May 2009 with a Bachelor in Architectural Engineering, as well as a minor in Architectural Studies and Engineering Mechanics. His emphasis is in structures.
He was born in Saigon, Vietnam. Having lived in many locations, it provided him the chance to learn many languages for communications. He can communicate in Cantonese, Mandarin, and Vietnamese. Stephen had always had a passion for architecture. However, it was not until after the September 11th attack on the World Trade Center did he take interest in architectural engineering. It is his ambition to design everlasting structures as have a few ancient Roman buildings such as the Curia Julia in the Roman Forum and the Pantheon. His idea of contributing to civilization is to leave behind a legacy indicating that humans once existed before an apocalyptic world, and the massive structural remains are proof of their existence and culture.
In 2007, Stephen had studied abroad in Rome and had the opportunity to travel and learn about the architecture and Italian culture in various places of Italy. It shall remain one of the most memorable moments of his life. Being able to immerse himself in a completely different culture, and live somewhere so beautiful and rich in history has only feed a portion of his hunger for architecture and engineering. Some of his other relevant interests include sustainable design, modern art, interior design and cultural studies.
After graduation, Stephen will seek employment in an AE/structural firm, and will either pursue an architectural degree or continue with his graduate studies in the near future. He plans on becoming a registered professional engineer practicing on the west coast.
