  Research Methodology

ITOW is based on information gathered through qualitative interviews with 24 undergraduate engineering students in 1996. All students were interviewed by an independent interviewer who used the same protocol, or set of questions, with each student. Students were questioned about positive and negative experiences in their engineering classrooms and other learning environments. Beyond that, what the students say is unsolicited. The ITOW video draws on this qualitative data, exploring emergent themes drawn from the transcripts of standardized student interviews.

  Video Support

Funding for this video workshop project was provided by the National Science Foundation through ECSEL, an Engineering Education Coalition.  The ITOW video was produced by ECSEL, at the Pennsylvania State University.

This video is based on work supported by the National Science Foundation under sub grant #634066D Mod #2.  The ideas and opinions in the video are exclusively those of the author(s).  Any opinions, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this production are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the views of the National Science Foundation, other funders or sponsors, or home institutions.

  Video Production

The original ITOW Workshop and Video (Video 1) were developed by:

Barbara Bogue, MEd
Director, Women in Engineering Program
The Pennsylvania State University

Rose Marra, PhD
Assistant Professor of Learning Technologies
University of Missouri

The alternative ITOW video adaptation (Video 2) was produced by:

Ardie Walser, PhD
Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering
City College of New York

  Video Outline

Both ITOW videos contain:
  • An optional introduction to the 'In Their Own Words Video'
  • Three video segments.  You may pause the video after each segment to raise and discuss issues that are important to workshop participants, and to capture ideas and responses for future action.  The three video segments are:
    1. "What a professor says is important"
    2. "I just felt totally overlooked..."
    3. "I felt like Tinkerbell in Never Never Land..."
  • Video credits

  Video 1

ITOW Video 1 is designed for Research I institutions.  The following links will take you directly to the video (It will open in a new window). You may begin the video at any stage (introduction, first segment, etc.) as follows:

  Video 2

ITOW Video 2 is an alternative video designed for non-research I institutions, smaller institutions and/or institutions with more diverse populations.  The videos are very similar with some changes to serve a variety of institutions.  The following links will take you directly to the video. (It will open in a new window.) You may begin the video at any stage (introduction, first segment, etc.) as follows:
