Course Reflection

While working for C.M. Kling and Associates Inc. the summer before my fifth year, I spent weeks looking for the perfect thesis building.  Many of the projects I looked into were too large or too small.  With the help of a coworker, who was a former AE graduate, I looked into the Woolly Mammoth Theatre. With her help I was able to receive all the necessary drawings and specifications.  The project team contacts I had were very helpful in finding out the necessary background information.  By the end of the summer I had received the owner’s permission to use the building for my thesis, as well as all visiting the building and having a personal tour of all the spaces.

During the fall semester, the course was structured with periodic deadlines for the technical assignments.  This made it easy to stay on task, not letting me procrastinate.  The first to technical assignments went very well.  For Tech 3, I was able to produce a professional schematic design for my lighting design of the Woolly Mammoth Theatre.  This was presented to a panel of design professionals from the industry at Lutron.  The professionals were very helpful in sorting out the good ideas from the bad and giving feedback on what concepts should be better developed.  This technical assignment set the stage for my lighting and electrical depth that I did in the spring.

The spring semester was definitely more challenging than the previous semester.  For the first time in my college career, I had a semester long project to do.  I quickly learned time management was the key to success.  I worked on lighting design and began electrical designs before spring break.  After spring break thesis consumed my life.  All of my time was spent making my thesis the best it could be, with the time restraint.  In the end, my project was turned in on time, and I was very happy with my work.  My thesis is the largest accomplishments of my college career.  It was a huge learning experience; learning to manage time, working with industry members for help and information, and designing a building that is functional and all building systems work together.

CPEP Reflection

Before thesis, I had very little experience with web design.  The templates provided to us for our websites were very easy to use and manipulate.  I believe having a web page made it easy for me to monitor my progress, as well as have the information available to professors and professionals.  The discussion board was a very useful tool as well.  I posted two questions throughout the semester and had a very good response.  The responses were helpful in giving me the information I was looking for or telling me where to look for it.
