Thesis Proposal

Depth Study

The purpose of my depth study is to investigate an alternative structural system for the KINSC that might possibly prove to be a more effective system overall than the existing system. The existing structural system is primarily precast concrete framing, with a precast hollow core plank floor system, and precast shear walls to support the building against lateral loads. My proposal is to investigate a completely steel structure with a composit floor system and a lateral force resisting system of steel braced frames. These two systems will be compared in a number of categories, mainly CM issues.

Breadth Study 1: CM issues

For my first breadth study, I will be researching the construction schedule and cost estimate of the newly proposed steel structural system. These key CM issues will then be compared to those of the existing precast structural system.

Breadth Study 2: Architecture / Mechanical System

The second breadth study that will be conducted will involve the architecture of the newly proposed structure. With the structure being designed as a steel frame, the layout of the building is not guaranteed to remain as it is currently. Therefore, it is imperative that the architecture be researched so that any new layout conditions of the building can properly correspond with the buildings architecture. Furthermore, the KINSC is directly adjoined to two existing concrete structures. Therefore, the architecture of the new steel building will need to coincide with the architecture of the two existing buildings. An investigation will be conducted to ensure this. However, should the architecture of the building change at an insignificant amount, the focus of this breadth study will need to change. Therefore, I have proposed to investigate the mechanical system of the building as the building framing changes from precast concrete to steel. The study would then focus on the fit of the mechanical system as possible floor depths may occur. Also, if necessary, an alternate route for the mechanical system may also require investigation.
