AE 481W/482 Course Reflection

The beginning of this class started with choosing a building. I chose the Rio Hondo Library and Learning Resource Center because I had previously worked on the project this past summer with Fox and Fox Design and already had contacts with the architects, designers, and engineers. This proved to be very helpful in attaining drawings and answers to questions with quick feedback.

During the first semester of work, the answers came pretty easily. However the second semester is where the time pressure came into play. The spaces that I chose were much larger compared to others, which took countless hours of calculation time with multiple computers. Running daylight calculations would take days in two of the spaces. If I could go back and choose smaller spaces then I would in an instant.

Senior thesis brought me through the entire design process of a project, from start to finish. Coming up with a concept and ideas in the beginning proved to be much harder than I had anticipated. Time management was crucial and I could have been better at this. I underestimated to a great extent on how long calculations of my spaces would be which had me up long nights towards the end.

CPEP & Discussion Board Reflection

The CPEP site for me was much harder to deal with because I am not familiar with website design. It seemed at the time to be more of a hassle than an advantage. However, it did make turning in of assignments easier and it is a great guide for future thesis reports. After becoming familiar with website design it proves to be a great asset. The discussion board seems like a very good idea for people who utilize it, but I never felt the need because any questions I had I went directly to the engineers on the project.
