AE 481W/482 Course Reflection

My experience of being an intern at Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum (HOK) Inc. has allowed me to gain access to one of the highest profile projects in this country, the Indianapolis International Airport, which is reported to be the first "Green", "Sustainable" airport to be built in United States since the 9/11 terrorist attack. With the most up to date security systems and state of the art building technology, this airport is definitely set out to provide me with challenges to modify. However, the toughest part of this thesis, is not even the progress. Getting started, is the toughest part, because I cannot obtain any MEP drawings due to security reasons. After a month of battle between the Indianapolis International Airport Authority, HOK and Syska Hennesey, I have finally managed to obtain one limited set of MEP drawings after signing the most elaboraed non-disclosure agreement I have ever seen in my life. It was a great feeling knowing that I can finally move on, after that, everything followed has been smooth and trouble free. Hence, my advice to students in the future is, "Don't get an airport project, unless you already have gotten your MEP drawings handy, and being over-ambitious, means 3 times more work then your peers".

Of course, at the end, I take pride in myself for handled it well. I delivered every assignment on time, completed with quality solutions. I found myself getting more comfortable with the subject matter, last but not least, it is some sort of specialty knowledge that no one else will get, because an airport is seriously, so much more different and complex than most other types of buildings, at least in my opinion. So, through the 2 courses, I have also gain the most valuable experience that a professional needs, Time Management. It is without a doubt an intense production experience, where we have to conduct experiement, research, trial and error, then provide superb, if not reasonable solutions to a building which is already existing.

CPEP & Discussion Board Reflection

I have not used the discussion board throughout the thesis, just simply because the answers I needed for the INDY Airport requires me to get in touch with most of the aviation designers back at the architectural firm. But, I do concur that it is a very useful tools where professinals replies with detail answers in the quickest manner.

As far as CPEP goes, I do find it tremendously helpful, especially with all my assignments uploaded, professionals can access the reports I have prepared instantly, from anywhere around the globe. I have also uploaded my portfolio and resumes onto my bio page, with a secret tracker that I have placed on my website, I have gotten visitors checking out my works from around globe, anywhere from Angola, Morroco, South Africa, Egypt, to China, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, to Italy, Spain, Germany, or even Switzerland. I was even surprised that there are that many people that would have stumble across this webpage. Hence, my conclusion is that, this is a great tool that is suitable, and almost mandatory to have for this age/era of information technology.
