Walt Nichols' Bio

Walt Nichols is currently in his fifth year of study in Penn State’s Architectural Engineering Program, focusing on the lighting/electrical option. He will graduate in May with a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering degree. Having an interest in architectural aesthetics, engineering, and computers, architectural engineering was a logical major to pursue for Walt. Inside the architectural engineering major, the lighting and electrical option suited his interests best. This option allowed him to use his understanding and enjoyment of engineering and creativity at the same time, and tie them together with his computer skills. Walt had an internship experience with Holophane Lighting this past summer. This internship allowed him to experience many of the different areas of the lighting field, including: design, sales, teaching, training, and optical engineering. These experiences were put to use in many different applications and projects, including both indoor and outdoor lighting. In his free time, Walt is a member of the student chapter of IES. He enjoys staying active by skateboarding, golfing, playing billiards, and practicing the martial art of Judo. He also likes to stay active mentally by sketching, painting, playing chess, and playing poker. Walt is currently preparing for his Fundamentals of Engineering Examination that he will be taking in October of 2005. He is planning on using his education and work experiences to complete his LC Examination in the near future. Walt plans staying involved in both lighting design as well as new lighting technologies throughout his career. He also plans on furthering his knowledge and understanding through personal research and design.
