Senior Thesis (AE 481W / AE 482) Reflection

Looking back over the past year, it is very clear to see that Senior Thesis is a very valuable, challenging, and rewarding experience. Senior Thesis is the perfect stepping stone between our academic and professional careers.

AE 481

By completing this course I have gained a better understanding of how to interpret a set of drawings and specifications, write effective technical reports, communicate with faculty and professionals, design alternative structural floor systems, calculate lateral loads and distribute them to the lateral force resisting system, use computer analysis and models to check the adequacy of structural members, and write a proposal. In the beginning of the course you are starting to become familiar with your building and by the end of the course you know the building so well that you are able to propose an alternative design. This course is a good review of what you have learned academically over the past four years.

AE 482

This course took my learning experiences to a more challenging level. By completing this course I was able to design a building using an alternative structural system from roof to floor system to foundation, use computer design and analysis programs, gain Construction Management and Mechanical breadth experience, write a final report, and give a presentation of my past year’s work to a faculty panel. Time management and communication skills were also further developed. This course was good preparation for what we will be doing in our professional careers.

Overall, by completing my Senior Thesis, I feel very prepared to start my career in Structural Engineering and I am looking forward it!

CPEP and Discussion Board Reflection

I am very fortunate to have been able to learn how to create and maintain an online portfolio webpage. It is nice to have a place to display and organize all of your hard work so that family, friends, faculty, and professionals are able to see all of your efforts and your progress throughout the year.

The discussion board is another very valuable aspect of Senior Thesis. It not only allows us to contact fellow classmates, faculty, and professionals in a timely and convenient manner, but it is also a unique learning tool. Being able to receive questions and responses from professionals, faculty, and classmates in all options and areas of Architectural Engineering, allowed us to learn more about subjects we may not have had a chance to study throughout our academic careers. Also, the correspondence with professionals and faculty, have allowed us to further develop our communication skills.
