Ming Norman Tsui is currently in his fifth year of study in Penn State’s
Architectural Engineering Program. While the name Ming in Chinese means
“light” or “illumination”, choosing his path to
emphasize in the lighting option is almost an intrinsic faith. Ever since
high school, he had already developed a strong appreciation for arts and
science. It wasn’t until college that he discovered his true passion,
architecture - a fusion of the two contrasting interest.
In pursuit of his passion for architecture, Norman took the opportunity
to study abroad for a semester in Rome, Italy, where he was able to reinforce
and apply his understanding of lighting on architectural design. Upon completion
of this endeavor, he successfully obtained a minor in architecture.
During the summer of 2005, Norman interned with international design firm,
Hellmuth, Obata+Kassabaum Inc. (HOK). At HOK, Norman worked under the HOK Lighting Group, at the same time providing design support for architects,
interior designers and landscape architects of various departments throughout
the firm. Prior to HOK, Norman works as a research assistant and graphic
consultant during summer and throughout the semester, providing architectural
modeling and photorealistic visualization services to several commercial design
firms. In June 2005, Norman was awarded first prize in the IESNA Howard Brandston Student Lighting Design Competition.
In his free time, Norman enjoys doing graphic design, digital architecture
studies as well as photography and playing soccer. He is also a member in
the student chapter of IES. Norman is scheduled to take the LEED Certification Examination within this fall and the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination
in April of 2006. He will be attending graduate school in pursuit of a master
degree in architecture. He looks forward to utilizing his education and
experience in his career by becoming a Registered Architect and obtaining
his Professional Engineering license.
