AE 481W/482 Course Reflection:

The two courses definitely provided a useful learning experience. The hands on experience in looking at drawings; consulting architects, engineers, owners, and contractors; determine areas for improvement and possible solutions helped us as students to get a better sense of what it is like to work in the field. Weekly meetings and individual meetings with consultants helped to keep a set schedule and pace for accomplishing goals on the project. Researching the existing systems for all the disciplines within my thesis building helped me to better understand how those systems work and where possible construction and design issues my occur. The spring semester involved the redesign of my depth area (lighting and electrical) along with two breadth topics which were a real challenge. It was interesting to try and deal with issues in building design that are not typically within your on design discipline. It gives all the students a better grasp of system integration and the need for interaction and coordiation between all disciplines within the engineering field.

CPEP and Discussion Board Reflection:

The CPEP site was very helpful in keeping reports and submittals organized and easy to access. It also allowed industry members, other students, and professors to look at my work and make suggestions and comments. Using the CPEP helped me to also become more familar with creating a useful website. The discussion boards were very useful to get real world solutions and answers to design questions in any discipline area. It was also interesting to see what other students were asking the professionals involved in the discussion boards, which usually sparked related questions for ideas for the thesis project. I really appreciate all the time and effort the engineer professionals put into answering all of our thesis questions in a timely manner.
