The two classes that composed the senior thesis this past year were two classes that most students at Penn State do not ever get to see. Most students that write and research thesis are either in the Honors College or are aiming for a higher academic degree. The first class, AE 481W, was not as bad as expected. The intense structure and outline of the corse made it easy to review all components of a building and pick out where the issues lie. Having 4 technical reports also kept students going and made them do the work required for each report. Though some reports were tedious it became a great help for the next semester for AE 482. The base that was created with the 481W class made referencing building elements and problems a breeze. Comming up with solutions to thoes problems is what made AE 482 difficult. The lack of a schedule in 482 served some good purposes. This gave the student the time required to do the apporpriate research to devlope a solution to the problems in their building or provided a range of time to do surveys, polls or case studies. The lack of the schedule made the student push themselves to do the work required for their thesis. Unfortunatly the motivation to complete a thesis can be a daunting task and can quickly demotivate a student. Many students did pull through and got the work required completed and even more so.
I
must add, I am happy the ordeal is over and I did take away some important
lessons on self motivation the ability to research construction industry
issues. I learned a lot about new technology and hope to be able to add
my input about to the company I'm going to work for in the future.
