Thesis Proposal

Depth Work: Structural
The depth work of the proposed thesis project will included a detailed analysis of a composite steel and concrete structural system that will replace the current cast-in-place model. The Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel will be re-designed based on applicable building codes and material specifications and will compare the use of braced-frames and shear walls as the major lateral force resisting system.

Breadth Work A: Construction Management - Construction Schedule Investigation
The proposed design using steel as the major support structure will have a dramatic impact on construction time, sequence, and erection method. Investigation into a corresponding construction schedule (with cost and material quantities) will be needed in order to compare both systems's erection efficiency.

Breadth Work B: Mechanical Systems - Plenum Space Impact
The impact of changing the floor system from post-tensioned concrete with monolithic column and beam support to a composite steel/concrete system will greatly affect the mechanical systems layout throughthe building. Proper analysis of this impact will be considered to ensure that the building correctly incorporates vital system requirements as well as considering structural modification impacts.
