Reflection

While working at HLB lighting design the summer before my 5th year,I spent weeks trying to pick the perfect senior thesis building. Finding a building and getting the owner permission form signed was more challenging than I had expected. Many projects that I found interesting were either too small or too large in size, or the owner would give approval for the building to be used. I found that the most successful way to obtain a thesis building was to ask a working AE grad. With the help of one of last year's lighting grads I chose a building that was not a glamorous space, but turned out to be perfect for my lighting thesis. She was able to help me get in touch with the architect and engineers to obtain drawings and learn more aobut the building. I ended up chosing The Franklin Care Center which provided a variety of spaces to make for interesting lighting designs, as well as the challenge of designing a comfortable space for the elderly.

Throughout senior thesis I not only learned the process of developing layouts and modifying the design and renderings, but I also learned the importance of time management on projects. While there were several due dates during the fall semester, spring semester was the first time I have ever had a project that would take the entire semester to complete. Luckily my Lutron presentation gave me many good ideas for my lighting designs, and I began my depth topics early in the semester. However I was a little pressed for time in the end of the semester since I had been concentrating on my depths and had not began my breadth topics yet. Beginning research on these topics earlier may have resulted in a more integrated thesis. However I was happy with the result and did complete my breadth topics well before the due date.

The CPEP website was very useful for turning in assignments and getting feedback from thesis advisors. I was also able to post my lighting design portfolio with my resume and give the website address to companies I was interviewing with. It was beneficial for them to see my portfolio and tech assignments before interviewing me for a position. The discussion board seems like a very useful tool, however I never made use of it beyond reading the class announcements. If I had a question that my advisors could not answer I am sure it would have been a very useful tool
