Gregory T. Lucier

Gregory Lucier serves as chief executive officer of Life Technologies and chairman of the company’s board of directors. Previously he served as chairman and chief executive officer of Invitrogen Corporation, which merged with Applied Biosystems in November 2008 to form Life Technologies.
The company is one of the largest providers of systems, biological reagents, and services supplying scientists around the world in every way that life science technologies are applied. Life Technologies aims to improve the human condition by fostering basic research, accelerating drug discovery and development, and advancing scientific exploration in areas such as regenerative science, molecular diagnostics, agricultural and environmental research, and 21st century forensics.
From June 2000 to May 2003, Lucier was president and chief executive officer of General Electric (GE) Medical Systems Information Technologies. Lucier was named a corporate officer of GE in 1999 by that company’s board of directors and served in a variety of leadership roles, including vice president of global services. Lucier has leveraged his background in healthcare management to prepare Life Technologies to participate in and shape the new era of personalized medicine.
Under Lucier’s leadership, Life Technologies has been recognized multiple times for contributions to the life sciences, as well as for its corporate citizenship. During Lucier’s tenure at Invitrogen, the company was recognized four years in a row with Life Science Industry Awards, which are given to leading life science suppliers. Many of Invitrogen’s innovations have received awards, including the company’s Qubit platform, which received the prestigious R&D 100 Award in 2007 and was named one of the most technologically significant products of the year. Lucier has received personal accolades as well. In 2009, he was named the North American Drug Discovery Technologies CEO of the Year by Frost & Sullivan, which also named Life Technologies the Drug Discovery Technologies Company of the Year. In 2007 he was named one of the 100 Most Inspiring People in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries by PharmaVoice Magazine. In 2006 he received the Penn State College of Engineering World-Class Engineer Alumni Award.
Lucier has also fostered a strong sense of corporate social responsibility at Life Technologies. Under his guidance, Invitrogen developed a robust philanthropy program dedicated to science education and promoting scientific literacy. The company formed the Invitrogen Foundation (now the Life Technologies Foundation) in 2008, which focuses on promoting the critical role science plays in society. Each year Lucier encourages employees to take one day of paid time off to participate in a Global Volunteer Day and to give of their own time to a variety of charitable organizations. Environmental efforts are also of paramount importance to Lucier. He has devoted extensive time and resources to making Life Technologies a truly sustainable company. As a result, the firm was selected as a new member of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) and named the leader of the biotechnology sector for 2008.
Lucier serves on the board of directors of the Biotechnology Industry Organization, as well as on the board of the Burnham Institute for Medical Research. He is actively involved at San Diego State University as a distinguished lecturer. He received a B.S. in industrial engineering from Penn State and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
