UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Douglas Werner, John L. and Genevieve H. McCain Chair Professor of Electrical Engineering, was recently presented with the 2019 Chen-To Tai Distinguished Educator Award by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S).

The award is given to a professor who has demonstrated outstanding work in the field of antennas and propagation. The IEEE AP-S specifically selected Werner for his achievements as an “inspiring teacher and mentor,” as well as for his “innovative contributions to advancing knowledge in electromagnetics,” according to their website.

“I am honored to receive this recognition from the IEEE AP-S for my contributions as a distinguished educator, mentor and researcher,” Werner said. “I would also like to express my deepest appreciation to each of my former and current graduate students, as well as my postdoctoral scholars. Without their contributions, this award would not have been possible.”

Werner received his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering and another master’s degree in mathematics from Penn State. He is the director of the Computational Electromagnetics and Antennas Research Lab as well as a faculty member of the Materials Research Institute (MRI) at Penn State.

Werner’s research and publications have been recognized with several awards, most recently the Department of Defense Ordnance Technology Consortium (DOTC) Outstanding Technical Achievement Award and the 2019 Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society (ACES) Computational Electromagnetics Award.

In addition to numerous awards for his publications, Werner also was presented with the College of Engineering Penn State Engineering Society Outstanding Research Award and Outstanding Teaching Award in March 2000 and March 2002, respectively. He also received an IEEE Central Pennsylvania Section Millennium Medal. In March 2009, he received the PSES Premier Research Award. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, the Institution of Engineering and Technology, the Optical Society and the ACES. He also is a senior member of the National Academy of Inventors and a senior member of the International Society for Optics and Photonics.

Werner is a former associate editor of Radio Science, a former editor of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Magazine, an editorial board member of Scientific Reports (a Nature sub-journal), an editorial board member for EPJ Applied Metamaterials, editor for the IEEE Press Series on Electromagnetic Wave Theory & Applications and a member of Union Radio-Scientifique Internationale Commissions B and G, Eta Kappa Nu, Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Xi.

He holds 20 patents and has published more than 800 technical papers and proceedings articles. He is also the author of five books and 30 book chapters with two additional books and several book chapters currently in preparation.
